Perfecting Your Craft

Anyone who practices any profession should always seek to take his craft to a higher level.  Whether it be in the field of the arts, music, literature or handmade craft,  a person needs to look for ways on how to further improve his skills and the products he creates.  This means not being contented with what you already have but going out of your way to gain further knowledge and information about your craft.  This would create more opportunities for both your personal and professional development.

To improve your craft, you may start by attending trade shows or seminars.  These affairs are rich sources of new information, new contacts and ways that you can adopt for improvement.  This will also give you the chance to establish your network with people who practice, is just starting or have already perfected the same craft.

Make it a point to read books and other reading materials.  Take the time out to visit bookstores, libraries and local craft shops for resources that can help you out.  Check out crafts magazines that  specifically discusses your particular skill.  You may also cut out clippings, collect them then compare the trends then and now.

Be sure to consult experts in the field.  Do not be shy or afraid to approach established people in the industry to get tips and advice on how to hone your craft.  More than anything else, they are the ones who can provide sound guidance and relevant information to you.  If you must, take down notes so you will not forget.  Or make mental note of everything that you learned then make a journal.  This way, you will be able to go back to all the information that you got when you need to.

Practice makes perfect so, make sure that you devote time to practice your craft on a regular basis.  Make a schedule and follow it strictly.  This will also develop the discipline required of anyone who is seeking perfection in what they do.

Don't be afraid to show your craft.  This is important because it builds your confidence.  Do not let small criticisms let you down, but instead use them to pull yourself up.

Finally, take time to rest and play.  Unguarded, spontaneous moments encourage the flow of creative juices and will give your mind the much needed time to recharge and cultivate creativity for your chosen craft.
